Wilt Chamberlain Scores 100
In a game with no television broadcast, Wilt Chamberlain set a scoring record that has stood for over sixty years.
On March 2, 1962, in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Wilt Chamberlain's Philadelphia Warriors played the New York Knicks in a game that wasn't even televised. Chamberlain scored 100 points, still the highest single-game total in NBA history.
The performance included 36 field goals and, notably, 28 made free throws -- a category where Chamberlain was normally a weak shooter -- on a night everything seemed to fall for him at once.
No player has come within twenty points of the mark in the decades since, and the game has become basketball shorthand for a statistical ceiling that may never be reached again, in part because the modern game is built around ball movement and shot distribution rather than feeding one dominant scorer all night.
